General tattoo aftercare

(Your artist may give specific instructions, but these are standard practices.)

Immediately After

-Keep the protective wrap/bandage on for the recommended time (2–24 hours).

-Wash hands before touching the tattoo.

-Gently wash tattoo with fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water.

Healing Stage (Days 1–14)

-Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel (don’t rub).

-Apply a thin layer of approved ointment (Aquaphor, A&D, or a tattoo-specific balm).

-Avoid heavy creams, Vaseline, or anything that suffocates the skin.

-Don’t scratch or pick at scabs/flakes.

Long-Term Care

-Moisturize daily.

-Always use sunscreen (SPF 30+) when exposed to sunlight.

-Stay hydrated and healthy to maintain skin quality.

Preparing for your tattoo appointment

-Hydrate & Moisturize your skin leading up to the appointment (but not the same day with lotion).

-Eat a full meal before your session to avoid dizziness or fainting.

-Avoid alcohol, aspirin, and blood thinners 24 hours prior (they increase bleeding).

-Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area.

-Bring snacks and water for long sessions.

-Get enough sleep the night before.

-Clean the area (shave gently if needed, unless your artist prefers to do it).

-Mentally prepare – tattoos can be uncomfortable, but manageable.

Type of tattoo service

Traditional Tattoos

-Bold lines, limited color palette, classic style.

-Often simpler aftercare compared to heavy realism because less trauma is done to the skin.

Black & Grey Tattoos

-Done with diluted black ink to create shading and gradients.

-Usually heals a bit faster than color tattoos.

Color Tattoos

-Use multiple pigments, often requiring more sessions.

-May need extra sun protection long-term (colors fade faster in sunlight).

Fine Line / Minimalist Tattoos

-Delicate, thin lines; very trendy.

-More prone to fading or blurring, so aftercare and touch-ups are extra important.

Realism / Portrait Tattoos

-Highly detailed, often large-scale.

-Healing may take longer due to the depth of shading and layering.

Cover-Ups

-Done to hide or transform an old tattoo.

-Aftercare is crucial since the skin is often reworked heavily.
